Abstract

558,123. Producing forgings. ARON, H. June 17, 1942, No. 8329. [Classes 83 (ii), 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] Forgings, for example produced by electrical upsetting or by a combination of such upsetting and die pressing, have unrequired metal such as flashes removed by hot milling or filing or are brought to a special shape by hot milling. After milling further forging may be effected. When rods are headed by the known process of feeding a rod 11, Fig. 1, through electrodes against an abutment 15, this becomes worn at 18 producing unwanted metal on the forging. The rod is taken by trays whilst still at red heat and whilst supported on a rest 19, Fig. 2, is turned about for removal of the surplus metal by a cutter 20. The trimmed blank is then dropped in a die 21, Fig. 3, for finishing by a top die 22 for example in a fly press to produce a rear axle forging. In another example for producing a cam or tappet members a rod headed as above has the head flattened laterally and a recess forged in the end thereof. Hot milling is then used to produce grooves in the head obtaining a desired result without complicated forging means. In a further example, similar to Fig. 1, two kinds of steel 34, 35 are flash welded at 36, Fig. 7, the blank is then held by tongs whilst supported on rollers for removal of the flash by hot milling. The rod is then upset as in the first example, unwanted metal removed by further hot milling and the article is finished by further pressing in dies to the shape shown in Fig. 11 in which the line 44 indicates the weld between the two studs.
