Abstract

580,437. Chain-saw machines. ALEXANDER, H. J., and TELES SMITH, Ltd. Dec. 15, 1944, No. 25226. [Class 145 (ii)] A chain-saw motor-operated unit 5 adapted to be operated and transported by one man is detachably mounted in a frame comprising two T-shaped rails 1, each mounted on a wheel 3, on which frame a cradle 4 (not shown) carrying the saw unit 5 can slide vertically, locking- means being arranged on the rails 1 to hold the unit in any position thereon, and the unit being arranged to fall under the action of gravity during the sawing operation. The unit 5 is attached to the cradle at or near the centre of gravity of the unit. The cradle 4 is of T-rail and engages each rail 1 by means of a pair of spaced lugs 10, 10a between which is a locking- means comprising a channelled member 11 slidably mounted on the rail 1 and with a pivoted. latch 11a having a detent which normally engages the side of the rail 1 but does not prevent vertical movement of the cradle. When a sudden upward movement is imparted to the cradle or saw unit the lug 10a releases the detent ; on a sudden downward movement the lug 10 jams the detent against the side of the rail 1 to lock the cradle thereto. A further locking-means consisting of a peg which passes through holes in the cradle and rail may be provided. The detent locking-means may be actuated by foot or hand operated levers or by Bowden wires.
