Abstract

580,339. Linear - dimension gauges. NEWALL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and SUMMERS, K. E. July 3, 1944, No. 12660. [Class 106 (ii)] In a linear-dimension gauge of the type having roller contact elements, the rollers are freely rotatable and are supported by the engagement of their outer surfaces with recesses in the frame. In the form described, two rollers 7, 8 are journalled in part-cylindrical recesses 5, 6 in a jaw 3 held by a frame 1 while two co-operating rollers 12, 13 are journalled in similar recesses 14, 15 in blocks 16, 17 formed with shanks, adjustably and independently supported in a second jaw 4 in a known manner. The outer rollers 7, 12 are screw-threaded throughout while the inner rollers 8, 13 are screw-threaded for only a few turns near one end and the remainder forms a cylindrical stem of reduced diameter, the bearing surfaces 6, 15 being formed with diameters appropriate to receive the rollers. One end of each of the four rollers is formed with reduced diameter so that it can be located longitudinally by a retaining plate 21 abutting against the shoulder so formed and being held in contact against a light spring washer 24 by a circlip 23 or by a retaining cap. The invention may be embodied in gauges having only one gap and also in gauges with rollers in the form of plain cylinders.
