772,595. Linear-dimension gauges. MASSEYHARRIS-FERGUSON (MANUFACTURING), Ltd. May 24, 1954 [June 16, 1953], No. 16537/53. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XX] A gauge for checking the centricity of transverse holes in shafts comprises relatively adjustable feelers 7, 8 for engaging a shaft at opposed peripheral locations and means for mounting between the feelers, a transverse pin 12 adapted to engage a transverse hole in the shaft and of the same diameter as the hole. The two feelers 7, 8 and pin 12 are slidable and lockable in a groove 6 and in use the pin 12 is inserted in the hole to be checked and the feelers 7, 8 adjusted and locked in contact with the shaft, after which the gauge is removed and replaced with the pin 12 entering the hole from its other end, and the feelers interchanged relative to the sides of the shaft. If one feeler fouls the shaft it is moved and the clearance at the other feeler indicates twice the error in centricity of the hole. A further feeler 20 may be provided to enter a longitudinal keyway in the shaft with the shaft placed on the pin 12 and contacting the remote feeler 7, the feeler 8 being out of action, after which the gauge is removed and replaced with the pin entering the hole from its other end and the feeler 7 contacting the same side of the shaft as before. Any lateral adjustment of the feeler 20 to enable it again to enter the keyway will be measure of the orientation of the axis of the hole from a line at right angles to the line of the key-way.
