Abstract

Tapered synthetic linear polyamide filaments are prepared by drawing a substantially uniform undrawn filament in such a manner that the drawing tension is varied in a controlled cycle between an upper and lower value, treating the variably drawn filament with an aqueous 20 per cent solution of formaldehyde containing acid catalysts and having a pH less than 3.0, and baking at a temperature between 100 DEG C. and 150 DEG C. The drawn filaments may be cut either before or after the soaking and baking treatment to produce tapered filaments suitable for use as fishing leaders and for the manufacture of paint brushes. The acid catalysts are acids with ionisation constants of not less than 1.0 x 102 at 25 DEG C. or water-soluble ammonium, amine or metallic salts of such acids, such as sulphuric, hydrochloric, sulphamic, sulphanilic, sodium hydrogen sulphate, ammonium sulphate, chloride, nitrate, sulphite, bisulphite, thiosulphate, or sulphamate, potassium iodide, potassium chloride mixed with boric acid, calcium chloride, hydroxylamine hydrochloride, aniline hydrochloride, aluminium sulphate and aluminium sulphate mixed with potassium chloride. The proportion of catalyst employed is preferably from 0.5 to 5 per cent of the weight of formaldehyde solution. The polyamide filament is preferably quenched in cold water as it is extruded as described in Specification 501,197. The tapering effect may be produced by displacing the filament vertically by a reciprocating pulley as it passes between two horizontally arranged draw points, or it may be drawn between two draw points, one of which is rotated at constant speed, while the other is driven at variable speed by elliptical gears, as in Specification 535,263, or it may be drawn from a roller having a slotted periphery by a roller rotating at higher speed as in Specification 554,203. The excess of formaldehyde solution adhering to the surface of the filaments is preferably removed and the filaments may be dried at 30-40 DEG C. prior to baking. Specifications 461,236, 461,237, 534,698 and 565,066 also are referred to.
