Abstract

339,089. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Nov. 14, 1928, [Convention date]. Albuminoids, processes for making filaments and films from.-Artificial threads, hairs, bands, or the like are obtained by dissolving natural silk waste in ortho-phosphoric acid, coagulating the viscous solution thus obtained by means of an alkali metal salt solution, and stretching the coagulated material to produce the required form. The solution may be prepared at room temperature; it is stable for several hours at ordinary temperature and at 0‹ C. for more than a day. The viscosity may be varied by the addition of water, phosphoric acid, or glycerine. The precipitating bath may be an aqueous solution of an alkali salt of a strong acid, preferably in the presence of an alkali salt of a weak acid such as sodium acetate, or ammonium formate. The salt of a strong acid may be the neutral or acid salt. If desired, the bath may contain only an alkali salt of a weak acid. The thread may be subject to stretching in the precipitating bath, or after leaving it. In an example, silk waste is dissolved in ten times its weight of 85 per cent phosphoric acid. After standing for some time the solution is pressed through nozzles into a saturated solution of sodium chloride containing ammonium formate. The coagulated thread is strongly stretched, wound up, washed, and dried. The threads show good extensibility and lustre, and high strength.
