578,837. Propelling aircraft. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and CLARKE, W. H. V. Oct. 14, 1941, No. 13199. [Class 4] An aircraft wing has one or. more ducts therein for receiving a jet propulsion unit, the duct, or each duct, having an elongated inlet orifice at the leading edge of the wing and an elongated outlet orifice in the upper surface of the wing near the trailing edge, the intermediate portion of the duct being of circular cross-section to accommodate the compressor and combustion chamber of the unit, the change of cross-section along the duct being gradual. A compressor 1 is driven by a turbine 2 to the rear of a combustion chamber 3, and the gases are discharged over the rear flaps 5 or over the ailerons of the wing to increase their effectiveness. A flap 7 at the upper edge of the rear orifice is linked to the flap 5 and remains parallel to it throughout its adjustment range so that the jet is always tangential to the flap or aileron. An electric starting motor at the front of the compressor acts as a generator when the compressor is running.
