578,026. Fusion electrolysis. KLOUMANN, S. April 18, 1944, No. 7134. [Class 41] In a system for producing light metals, e.g., aluminium, by fusion-electrolysis, the cells 9 are arranged in series, the extension 11 of the cathode bar 10 of one being connected by flexible conductors 18 to the anode bar 12 of the next, and so on. The ready-baked carbon anodes 1, having a length at least twice that of any of its cross-sectional dimensions, and preferably three to four times the height, are pre-heated before use and suspended horizontally by means of a continuous member or series of members 14 which are held in a slot or slots 13 by casting-in iron 15. The anodes may be moved vertically by means of screw jacks 17, the forked ends 170 of which support the bar 12, which is flanked by anode-supporting conductors 120 fixed thereto. The conductors 18 are fixed to the bar 12 by means of a pressure bolt 20 in a slot 19, allowing easy removal. The number of anodes per cell is two or three, their area being nearly as great as the cross-sectional area of the cell. A separate bar 12 is provided for each anode.
