Abstract

577,427. Valves. WESLAKE, H., BALLARD, W. E., and METALLISATION. Ltd. Nov. 23,1943, Nos: 19563/43 and 5292/44. [Class 7 (vi)] [Also in Group II] Any part of a valve which is liable to erosion or corrosion by burning is alloyed on its surface with a protective metal such as aluminium or silver. After an initial roughening treatment with sand blast &c. the part is coated by a spray gun with the aluminium or an aluminium-cadmium alloy containing not less than 0.3 per cent cadmium, to a depth of not less than 0.006 inch and the part and coating are heated to at least 800‹ C. to alloy them together. The alloy is cooled rapidly and subjected to a known tempering or normalising process. The heat treatment is carried out in an atmosphere which will oxidise the surface of the alloy. The surface is finally abraided slightly and may receive a polishing or burnishing treatment. As shown, the valve head 14 and exposed part 15 of the stem 22 are treated as also are the valve seat 16 and the top 17 of the valve guide. To prevent the guide from rubbing away the alloy on the stem, it is counterbored to provide some clearance at its upper end or the valve stem is reduced in diameter for this purpose. Parts not exposed to the hot gases may be coated without being subjected to the alloying heat treatment. If desired, the seating surface 13 of the valve head may be unprotected to improve its heat conducting properties and the valve seat 16 may be made of an alloy sold under Registered Trade Mark "Stellite" or "Bright Ray." The areas treated are so proportioned to the untreated areas of the valve that the rate of heat dissipation from the latter exceeds the rate of heat absorption the former.
