Abstract

576,207. Miniature engines. SPAREY, L. H. April 27, 1944, No. 7880. [Classes 7 (ii), 7 (iii) and 7 (v)] A miniature engine, particularly suitable as a two-stroke engine for use in model aeroplanes and boats, has one or more cylinders and fuel tanks radiating from the crank-case. As shown, the single cylinder engine has a fuel tank 33 diametrically opposed to the cylinder 21 so as to assimilate an opposed cylinder engine, the tank being made the same size as the cylinder and having fins 35. The invention is also applicable to radial-cylinder engines. The carburetter comprises a telescopic air inlet passage 39 which extends outside the model so as to be capable of being closed by a finger to facilitate starting and a nozzle at the end of a pipe 40 through which fuel is drawn by engine suction, the delivery being controlled by a needle valve on the end of a long shaft 43 which can be adjusted by a knob 46 outside the model. The crank-case is open on one side to allow the crank-shaft, which has a bearing only on the other side, to be assembled. After assembly, the crank-case is closed by a disc plate projecting into the crank chamber. The supply of mixture to the crank-case is controlled by a disc valve 15, or a sleeve valve, and the mixture after compression by the piston is conveyed to the combustion chamber by a transfer passage 23 and port 25, a piston baffle 30 being provided. An ignition cut-out lever which extends outside the model is attached to the normally stationary contact of a make and break device but has enough flexibility to be capable of flexing to prevent the contact points from opening. A twin cylinder engine is also described, the cylinders being arranged at less than 180‹ to one another, preferably at 90‹ and the fuel tank extending from the bottom of the crank-case. Both cylinders fire together, the crank case serving as a common induction chamber. This arrangement may be modified by dividing the crank case into separate chambers, each chamber having a separate disc valve and the cylinders being fired separately. The cylinders may have detachable heads and be formed integrally with both the fuel tank and the crank-case.
