Abstract

575,473. Safety razors. HEIDE, H. C. (Gillette Safety Razor Co.). March 21, 1944, No. 5283. [Class 30] In a safety razor of the pivoted blade type, the blade is normally retained in shaving position by a member 35, Fig. 2, slidable in a plane parallel to the plane of the blade and having arms 41, Figs. 1 and 2, engaging the ends of the edge of the blade and a connecting bar 42 engaging the face of the blade and preventing movement about its pivot shaft 21. The member 35 may.be slidden sufficiently by a finger piece 36 or by a finger on a blade magazine to release the blade from the arms 41 while keeping it held by the bar 42, so that the old blade may be ejected and a new blade inserted by endwise movement without fear of the cutting edge contacting any part of the razor head. The guide for the member 35 is formed by cut-away portions of a stem 11 of square section, which may form the handle or be removably inserted in a handle 10. The guard 33 has a portion 32 forming a blade seat, and a base portion 30 which, with the base portion 16 connecting the side plates 18 of the razor head, is secured by screws to ears projecting from the sides of the stem 11. The blade 50 is held between plates 22, 23 projecting from a sleeve 25 fixed to the shaft 21 and notches in the ends of the blade are engaged by small rollers 24 carried by the plate 22 to hold the blade yieldingly in position. A blade magazine, Fig. 5, comprises a box having a blade feed slide 53 for ejecting blades singly through a slot 501 and the box is provided with a projecting finger 51 in a plane parallel to the plane of the blades, and a dowel pin 52. One side plate 18 of the razor head is provided with a hole to receive the dowel pin, and a cut-away part to receive the finger 51, which then enters between a lip 34 on the guard 33 and a lip 40 on the retaining member 35 to press the latter back against the action of a spring 29 sufficiently to release the blade from the arms 41 but insufficient to move the bar 42 clear of the blade. The feed slide 53 of the magazine may now be operated to push a new blade into the razor and eject the old blade. Upon withdrawing the finger 51, the spring 29 acts to return the member 35 to blade retaining position. To enable the blade to be stropped or cleaned, the member 35 is moved by the finger piece 36 sufficiently to move the bar 42 clear of the blade to allow the latter to turn about its pivot axis 21.
