Abstract
575,144. Tube joints. BOOTH & CO., Ltd., J., and TEMPLE, J. E. Feb. 22, 1944, No. 3263. [Class 99 (i)] [Also in Group XXXI] A tubular frame for a cycle or other structure comprises tubes of aluminium or light metal alloy having their ends formed externally to a suitable taper and inserted in the sockets of lugs which may-be of similar material thermosetting plastic adhesive being applied to one or both of the surfaces to be united, and the necessary pressure being obtained by applying a force to the members along their axes, and heat being applied to the joints while the pressure is maintained. The tubes 10, 11, 12 may be made of either heat-treatable or non heattreatable light metal or metal alloy. The ends 13 of the tubes are swaged preferably while the metal is still ductile to a taper of about one in sixteen. The lugs 15 are pressure die castings of for example a ten to twelve per cent. silicon casting alloy, the interior surfaces 13 being produced accurately without machining. In assembly the tapered ends of the tubes are coated with the plastic adhesive and are pressed into the sockets to form the cycle frame which is held by a jig. The latter may have some fixed and some adjustable abutments to enable axial pressure to be applied on all the tubes. The complete frame and jig may then be placed in a muffle to apply the heat which is required to harden the adhesive but may also provide all or part of the heat treatment of the lugs and tubes. According to the Provisional Specification the tapered surfaces of the tube and/or lugs may be provided with longitudinal or circumferential grooves to hold the plastic adhesive and the thickness of the tubes may vary to suit greater stresses at their ends.
