Abstract
575,110. Dividing-engines. SYKES, Ltd., W. E., and COLLINSON, W. J. Feb. 28, 1944, No. 3657. [Class 97 (iii)] [Also in Group XXII] In indexing or similar machines for rotating a blank step-by-step to bring successive portions thereof into position for engagement with the cutting element whilst the latter is out of engagement with the blank, an intermittently rotated pinion 5 on the driving shaft 3 is adapted to engage spaced sets of teeth 18 on a gear 10 attached to the driven shaft 4, the work being indexed whilst these teeth are in engagement to produce one required pitch of teeth, grooves, &c. which are to be cut on the work. When the teeth 5, 18 come out of engagement, one of a set of rollers 16 on a disc 14 attached to the shaft 3 enters a radial slot 12 on the face of the gear 10 to rotate the work more,rapidly and so index it to produce teeth &c. of a different pitch, after which the teeth 5, 18 again engage to produce another group of teeth &c. of the original pitch. Rotation of the shaft 4 is transmitted by a further gear on the shaft to a pinion 7 and thence to the work. The rollers 16 are radially adjustable in slots 15 on the disc 14 to vary the gear ratio and the slots 12 are formed by guides 13 attached to the face of the gear 10.
