Abstract
575,032. Wood, forms of. KELSON, S. Jan. 12, 1944, No. 633. [Class 145 (i)] [Also in Group XXXIII] Core elements for built-up structures such as doors, panels or wings or struts for aircraft are formed from sheets of veneer or plywood 121, 122, 123, 124 which are, in the first place, laid upon one another and connected together at adjacent surfaces by lines of artificial resin &c. 13, 14 which are staggered relatively to one another, and after the join is secure, the sheets are expanded to the lattice form shown, and spacing members 15 are inserted to maintain the layers apart, or the layers may be kept apart by inserting the ends in recesses 18 of posts 19 forming part of a panel or door in which the structure is mounted. The crests of the curves of the lattice member may be secured by cement to the top of the panel &c. This member may be completed by means of plywood sheets, one layer of plywood cemented on both sides being placed around the core member and a further layer of plain plywood being added to complete the structure. As shown in Fig. 3, the wing, or a strut for an aircraft, is formed of a core built up of a lattice formed from sheets 121, 122, 123, 124 as described above, the ends of all the sheets being cemented together and to outer shaped members 125, 126 of thicker material. A number of core elements may be built up by mass production by uniting under heat and pressure a number of long plywood sheets along lines 13, 14 staggered as shown, each sheet being coated with a number of lines of an artificial resin such as a phenol-formaldehyde or urea-formaldehyde resin. A multiple-saw may cut the sheets into desired lengths which are subsequently expanded to lattice form and spacers inserted. The resin is heated by diathermy to melt and cure it. Other methods of connecting the layers along staggered lines may be employed. Specifications 19814/92, [Class 87], 120,701, [Class 4], 157,432, [Class 52 (i)], 492,630, [Group XXXII], 501,172, 519,061, 538,306, 556,620 and 3178/40, as open to inspection under Sect. 91, are referred to.
