Abstract

Saturated ketones are made by catalytic hydrogenation with Raney nickel under pressures not exceeding 2 atmospheres of a -b -unsaturated ketones in neutral or slightly acid condition. Acidity may be produced by adding an organic acid or a hydrochloride or hydrobromide of a tertiary amine. Examples p describe the hydrogenation of mesityl oxide, 5-methylheptene-4-one-3, 3-4-dimethylhexene-3-one-2 and 3-methylheptene-3-one-2-.
