Abstract

574,285. Machinery guards. BROUGHTON, G. J. Jan. 26, 1944, No. 1439. [Class 80 (iv)] A guard for rotating parts of machines and particularly drilling - machines, comprises a sleeve 10 with a flange at its upper end in the form of a split band 34 with lugs 35 and bolt 36, whereby it may be secured to a non- rotating part of the machine, but which is movable axially. Slidably mounted within this sleeve is a second sleeve 14 having a radial stud 16 and nut 17 to enable it to be secured at any point along a slot 15 in the sleeve 10. Both sleeves may have additional slots 18 for insertion of a drift to release the drill. The inner sleeve 14 terminates in an enlarged end 19 upon which is mounted a further sleeve 20 which is normally maintained in its extended position by a spring 21, one end of which engages a shoulder 22 formed by the enlargement 19, and the other end engages inwardly bent lugs 23 at the free edge of sleeve 20. Inspection slots 24 or an opening with a transparent window are provided in sleeve 20, the movement of which is limited by lugs 38, in enlargement 19, engaging these slots. On the sleeve 20 is slidably mounted a further sleeve 25 provided with a slot 27 to receive a radial stud 26 and wing nut 28 on sleeve 20, whereby sleeve 25 may be secured in adjusted position. Inspection slots 29 or a window may be formed in the sleeve 25. To hold the sleeves 20, 25 in their extreme raised position for the purpose of fitting a new tool or making an adjustment, a catch lever 31 ... 33, Fig. 1, is pivoted on lugs 30 so that it can be swung inwardly to rest on the shoulder 22 of the enlargement 19.
