[Class 146 (iii)] In a magazine pencil similar in general construction to that described in Specification 449,222 there is provided an automatic locking device operative only when the knob 10 has been partially depressed and subsequently released which acts between the clamping sleeve 4 and the tube 2 to prevent the return of the guide tube 2, whereby the gripping member 3 remains open, sc that during the last part of the return movement of the point member 8 the lead is not held and remains in an inoperative position above the entrance tc the channel 9. The clamping sleeve 4 secured to the casing 1 is provided with two locking members 14 having projections 15 which engage notches 16 in the tube 2 when the latter is advanced a distance h by advancing the knob 10 an amount d + h. In this position the clamping sleeve 4 and tube 2 are locked relatively together with the gripping member open. When the knob 10 is advanced an amount d + h the tube 2 is advanced an amount H causing a ring 17 carried loosely thereon to pass between the projections 15 thus allowing notches 16 on the release of the knob 10 to pass between them, consequently permitting the gripping member to return to its initial position whereby the lead is clamped in the writing position. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that more or less than two locking members 14 may be provided and that the ring 17 may be replaced by other means for opening out the locking members for example telescopic parts. Also, the locking members may be provided on the guide tube and the projections on the clamping ring or means other than projections may be provided to produce the locking action. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
