Abstract

574,145. Slicing-machines. WOOD, G. R., and TOLEDO SCALE CO. Jan. 1, 1944, No. 6. [Class 28 (ii)] In a rotating knife slicing-machine, the housing 11 for the knife drive also contains the knife sharpener, the housing having an opening to permit movement of the sharpening wheels 74, 83 from inactive to sharpening position. The substance to. be cut rests in a holder 16 and is pressed towards the gauge plate 14 by a spring fed clamp 17. The substance holder is reciprocated by hand so that the substance contacts the rotary knife and the slices cut off are deflected by a plate 18 and fall on to the slice receiver 19. When the push button 53 is pressed a hatch cover 49 is pushed up by a spring 55 so exposing a short sector of the edge of the knife 12; the button 64 pulls a link 65 to the left, so moving a bent latch 66 to the left so freeing it from a stop 67 and allowing a spring 61 to swing the sharpener to active position. The spring 61 raises the sharpener up and to the right with sufficient momentum to carry it past a dead centre. The sharpener then swings over until a foot 68, Fig. 11, on the U-shaped frame 63 engages the top of an arm 45 of bracket 41. The latch 66 is urged to the right by spring 69 so that latch 66 snaps beneath the other shoulder of 67 and holds the sharpener in position. By means of a knob 89 the operator can push the grinding wheel 83 forward to engage the bevelled edge of the knife and by means of knob 82 he can pull the finishing wheel 74 into engagement with the flat edge of the knife. The sharpener is returned to inactive position by pulling the open hatch cover 49 slightly to the left so disengaging latch 66 from the shoulder of 67. The sharpener is then pushed down to the left, relieving the pressure on the hatch cover 49, so that latch 66 snaps over the other shoulder of 67, thus locking the sharpener in inactive position. The hatch cover is then closed. When the knife wears, the sharpener can be lowered by means of elongated holes 43 and screws holding it. The housing contains the sharpener (in an upper tower) the knife, motor 20, drive stand 21, pulleys and belts. The housing comprises the casing 11, hatch cover. 49 and knife guard 13 which is located by pins 34 and clips and partly covers the knife trough 27 in the base. The thickness gauge plate 14 is operated by a knob 15. The trough 27 provides room to insert a cloth to clean particles clinging to or thrown from the knife so that they cannot get on the knife sharpening wheels. The bottom portion of a partition 28 within the housing 11 forms one side of the trough 27 and also prevents ingress of grease &c. into the housing. The partition 28 surrounds the knife hub 26. In a modification (Figs. 15 to 17, not shown), the substance holder is inclined to feed the substance by gravity against the gauge plate and the knife. Fig. 20 (not shown) shows another method of opening the hatch cover and releasing the sharpening device. In Fig. 11 (not shown), the hatch cover is not at the top, but at the rear of the housing.
