Abstract

In synthesizing liquid hydrocarbons from gaseous mixtures containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst, the through-put of the gases and the temperature are adjusted so that the reaction is carried out at less than maximum efficiency, whereby the active life of the catalyst is prolonged and the fog production is diminished. In using a cobalt-thoria catalyst which operated at 175-220 DEG C. the reaction is started at the lower end of the range and the gas flow per hour is adjusted to 70-80 vols per unit vol. of catalyst space. The temperature is raised until up to 80 per cent of the theoretical yield is obtained and is subsequently adjusted to maintain this yield. Specification 509,325 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 507,366 and 518,372.
