Abstract

Olefines.-In the production of olefines by the thermal decomposition in the gaseous phase of saturated hydrocarbons higher than ethane, if desired in the presence of metal oxide catalysts, between one and nine proportions by volume of methane are added to the starting materials to increase the yield of olefines and suppress the formation of methane. Propane or its homologues or mixtures thereof, or mixtures containing satu. rated hydrocarbons such as mineral oils, brown coal tars, and the product derived therefrom by destructive hydrogenation, distillation, or cracking, may be used as starting materials. Suitable metal oxide catalysts are the oxides of zinc, magnesium, calcium, uranium, or silver. Porous substances such as pumice or artificial zeolite may also be present. The process may be carried out at ordinary, reduced, or increased pressure, and temperature of 600‹ to 700‹ C. are suitable. Extraneous gases such as steam, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, or hydrogen may be present. According to examples, ethylene, propylene, and isobutylene are produced by passing mixtures of propane, isobutane, methane, and nitrogen at 650‹ C. through tubes of quartz or V2A steel containing pumice stone, with which zinc oxide may be mixed. The Provisional Specification is not restricted to gaseous phase reactions, and refers to the use of catalysts in general. Specifications 17822/15 and 303,998 are referred to.
