Abstract

573,245. Surveying instruments. ROOT, R. Nov. 10, 1943, No. 18671. [Class 97 (ii)] In an apparatus for measuring the vertical distance of a point above two other points, all three of which are on a road or other surface comprising a stock grooved to accommodate a T-slide, spring-controlled rollers retain the stock and T -slide in contact and a scale graduated from a central zero is mounted on the stock. Fig. 1 shows the slide B with shank D and T- piece E slidable in.a groove in the stock A locking means Q and scale C being provided. Figs. 3 and 4 show the details of one of the three rollers, the sides of the steel frame F pivoting in bushes J in the sides of the stock A and the central part forming an axle for the wheel H, collars G keeping the wheel H in a central position and spring K screwed to the stock A at L pressing at M on ,the collar G and maintaining contact between the slide B and the stock A. In use three such devices are used, two of which are fixed, the slide being extended to make the overall lengths equal. The third device is adjusted so that it is exactly the same length and the scale C fixed to the stock A so that the zero is opposite the bottom of the slide. The three rods are now placed one on each of the three points and the T-piece E of the adjustable boring rod aligned with the other two. The vertical distance can then be read directly from the scale C.
