Abstract

573,178. Automatic gramophones. PAILLARD & CIE SOC. ANON, E. March 30, 1943, No. 5092. Convention date, Oct. 10, 1942. [Class 40 (ii)] In an automatic gramophone, means for detecting the size of the next record to be played so as to position the pick-up accordingly comprises a feeler member 28 carried on one of the rotary members 9 which serve to support the pile of records above the turntable, the feeler member carrying projections 31, 32 which engage the underside of the record through apertures in the support. At the end of playing a record, a shaft 8 makes one revolution and a pivoted slotted lever 14 is oscillated by eccentric pin 12 to control through a further pin 16 on a lever 17 the rotation of support 9 to release the next record. Lever 14 also has an opening 21 for reception of the pin 16 when it is desired to repeat a record as described in Specification 368,206. If the next record is of the larger size, projection 32 engages its lower face, Fig. 3, and during rotation of support 9, driving member 35 engages an arm 37 on a sleeve surrounding shaft 10 and a pin on the other end of the sleeve operates lever 41 to inove lever 42 to the dotted-line position. A pin 44 on lever 42 now rides on the outside of a cam 26 on shaft 8 and a pin 24 on an arm 23 secured to the pick-up shaft 22 rides on the inside of cam 26 to position the_ pick-up for a large-size record. When a small record is to be played, projection 32 passes through support 9 and projection 31 engages the lower face of the record. In this case, members 35, 37 do not engage, lever 42 remains in the full-line position, pin 44 rides on the inside of cam 26, and pin 24 is held by arm 42 away from cam 26 so that the pick-up is positioned for a smaller-size record. When the last record of a pile has been played, projection 31 also passes through support 9 and a member 50 engages arm 37 during the return movement of support 9 to release a catch 54, 55 controlling a motor switch 56 as described in Specification 573,179. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to (i) the provision of a second catch also controlling the operation of switch 56 and operated by the entrance of the pick-up into the last groove of a record, (ii) means associated with lever 17 to ensure the return of the pick-up to the first track of a record of either size when repeating a playing, and (iii) modifications in which the projections 31, 32 are carried on separate feeler members or the feeler member is in the form of a spring- controlled finger sliding in a groove and engaging the periphery of the record. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
