In an automatic gramophone a tap-tap lever 5 is frictionally coupled to a pivotally mounted actuating arm 8 on a movable post 6, and an operating pin 16 is coupled by a driving element 17 to the pick-up arm shaft 4 and movable to engage and swing the actuating arm such that, when the tap-tap lever is moved longitudinally after the run-off groove has initiated such movement, the actuating arm is moved in the same direction as the driving element 17 normally moves during record playing, whereby reaction on the pick-up arm is reduced. During the early stages of the playing of a record the operating pin 16 moves along a slot 7 in the base-plate 2 in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1. At a later stage the pin 16 engages a cam 12 on the actuating arm 8 and moves it and the tap-tap lever about post 6 towards a striking lug 20 on the turntable spindle. When the stylus passes into the runoff groove, the end of the tap-tap lever intercepts lug 20 and is moved longitudinally so that post 6 passes along an arcuate section 7a of slot 7 to break a switch or initiate an automatic cycle, and at the same time moves the cam surface 12 away from the operating pin 16. Outward movement of the pick-up arm later causes pin 16 to engage the left-hand ends, as viewed in the Figures, of slots 13, 14a, respectively, in arm 8 and lever 5 to restore the parts to their initial positions.
