Abstract
Alkali-resistant filaments, films, or the like, having a basis of alginic material are obtained by subjecting the materials, during or subsequently to the process of filament or film formation, to the action of an aldehyde at elevated temperature and in the presence of an acidic substance. The aldehyde treatment appears to result in the cross-linking of alginic acid molecules by methylene groups. Preferably, the treatment with aldehyde is effected after preliminarily coagulating with calcium chloride or strong mineral acid solutions. In an example, sodium alginate solution is extruded into a coagulating bath containing dilute sulphuric acid. The alginic acid yarn obtained is dried and then immersed in a solution containing ammonium chloride, formaldehyde, and water. It is removed, squeezed and heated in a steam oven. The treated yarn is resistant to the solvent action of soap and soda solutions. In another example, a freshly spun, wet, yarn of alginic acid is passed through a washing bath and then through an acidified solution of formaldehyde and ammonium chloride. It is then led through a hot-air drier. Alginic acid yarn is immersed in a solution obtained by dissolving paraformaldehyde in dilute hydrochloric acid solution. It is squeezed and heated. Alginic acid yarn is immersed in a solution of tartaric acid, paraformaldehyde, ammonium chloride and water, and then squeezed and heated. Hanks of alginic acid yarn are exposed to the vapour of heated paraformaldehyde while suspended in a steam-heated chamber. In this case, the alginic acid itself serves as catalyst. The alkali-resistant alginic acid yarn may be converted into a metal alginate yarn by treatment with a solution of a metal salt, e.g. calcium acetate. The aldehyde treatment may be applied to metal alginate yarn, e.g. beryllium or chromium alginate. The treatment may be applied to yarns as they are produced or when they are in the form of hanks, or it may be applied after the yarn has been woven into fabric. Specifications 541,847, 545,872 and 548,248 are referred to.
