Abstract

253,853. Lilienfeld, L. June 17, 1925, [Convention date]. Yarns and threads, treating with liquids and vapours.-Artificial textile materials such as viscose silk, cuprammonia silk, and denitrated nitro-silk, are improved as regards their strength by treatment with a solution of caustic alkali of not more than 5 per cent strength, preferably of less than one per cent strength, it being a necessary condition that the material should be maintained in a stretched condition during at least part of the treatment. The material may be treated when in the form of threads, skeins, cops, &c., or as woven materials consisting of artificial textile materials alone, or mixed with cotton, silk, wool, &c. The alkali solution may be applied by passage of the material therethrough, or by spraying or by contact with moistened rollers, or by other methods. The material may be finally steamed or heated. In examples, artificial silk is passed through 0.2-0.3 per cent caustic solution, preferably while stretching the material, then dried, wound, washed with or without previous treatment with a solution of common salt, ammonium sulphate, acid, &c., and finally dried. Alternatively, the impregnated silk may be washed directly after impregnation, or treated with an acid, salt, &c. at this stage.
