Abstract

572,221. Planing-machines. BINDING, A. O. April 6, 1944, No. 6473. [Class 145 (i)] A planing-machine which is especially applicable for producing slivers of wood, or fibre to act as battery separators is constructed of a power-driven cutter roller 4 mounted in horizontal bearings in frames, the work being fed in and out of operation by knurled steel rollers 8 and spring-pressed rubber rollers 7 geared thereto and driven by sprocket gearing. During the planing operation the work is pressed against an adjustable guide 12 with rounded ends 13 by means of presser members 17 of triangular section fixed by screws 19 to bars attached to lever arms 18 acted upon by adjustable springs 21 to cause the pressers to move the guide 12 into contact with adjustable set-screws 31 which determine the distance of the guide from the cutter 4 and so govern the thickness of the sliver. The guide 12 is connected to bolts 24 raised by springs 32 to maintain it in raised position. The screws 31 pass through a supported bar 22 which also supports the springs 32. Guides 34 are arranged near the rollers 7, 8.
