780,635. Sawing; woodworking. REICH, K. M., and REICH, K. Sept. 2, 1955 [Sept. 4, 1954], No. 25288/55. Class 145. [Also in Group XXIV] Roller feed means for a saw or a planing or moulding machine has a housing 10 which is vertically adjustable on a column and carries independently sprung rollers 17 each supported by a shaft 21, the shafts being angularly adjustable about their axes simultaneously during operation of the machine so that a force transverse to the feed direction can be applied to the workpiece 30. The shafts 21 are angularly adjustable by a rail 33 which has pins 32 engaging a fork 24 on each shaft and is axially adjustable by a screw and nut combination. The rollers are driven from a motor through gearwheels 11 and universal couplings 14. The pressure of a spring 25 on each shaft is variable by means of a sliding sleeve 26 which has annular rack teeth 27 engaged by one of a corresponding number of pinions 29 on a handleoperated shaft 28. If a plank to be sawn already has a squared side surface the rollers are set to press this side against a fence 38 but, if its sides have natural irregular surfaces, the fence 38 is removed and the plank is guided by the web 3 of a T-shaped guide or fence aligned with and extending through the saw slot.
