Abstract
571,816. Impregnation of timber. TRIGGS, W. W. (Bolidens Gruvaktiebolag). Feb. 6, 1943, No. 2003. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug 9. 1943] [Class 140] In a process for the full-cell impregnation of timber with preservative liquid by placing it in a closed cylinder, filling the cylinder with a liquid, pumping out said liquid and so creating a vacuum in the cylinder, and after an interval filling the cylinder with preservative liquid which is then forced into the material by pressure, the same pump or pumps are used for evacuation transfer of liquid, and compression. The two liquids may both be preservative liquids, e.g., containing arsenic compound as described in Specification 468,378. Apparatus for the impregnation may comprise a cylinder A for housing the timber, connected through a valve B and pump D with a tank C for the liquid, and having an outlet valve E. In operation, with valves B and E open, cylinder A is filled with liquid from tank C by pump D. Valve E is closed, and the liquid is pumped back by D into C, leaving a vacuum in A, valve B being then closed. To improve the vacuum, A may if desired be refilled with liquid from C, air that has been sucked out of the timber being let out through E, and A again evacuated by D. After an interval, B is opened and A again filled with liquid from C by D, any air in A being let out through E as before. The liquid in A is compressed by D and forced into the material, any surplus being then pumped back into C either with E open or, if subsequent dripping is to be reduced, with E closed so as to subject the material for a short time to a vacuum by pump D before admitting air at E. In an alternative apparatus, tank C is at a higher level than cylinder A so that liquid may flow from it under gravity into A through a valved pipe, and the pump D is not used for filling A with liquid. Tank C may be placed at a lower level than A. The plant may be provided with known arrangements for drying, steaming &c., and for heating the liquid.
