Abstract

571,683. Wood working. FAIRWEATHER, W. C. (American Foundry Equipment Co.). April 14, 1944, No. 6895. [Class 145 (i)] A process for mechanically filling the pores of porous wood preparatory to the application of a primer, paint, lacquer or finishing coat thereto consists in depositing a dry filling powder such as silica ground to powder into the pores by the action of hard balls or steel shot, 10, Fig. 3, which have been previously coated or mixed with the dry powder 11. The balls 10 are projected by means of a bladed centrifugal blasting wheel 4, Fig. 4, at a high speed, and the wood 1 may be carried past the projected balls by means of a conveyer. Excess of powder is to be avoided. The wood may be stained during the filling process by mixing a dry colouring material such as pigments, dyes, or lakes with the powder. A wiper may remove surplus powder from the surface of the wood.
