571,471. Gas turbine plant. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. May 11, 1943, No. 7445. Convention date, May 30, 1942. [Classes 110 (i) and 110 (iii)] Compressed air or other gas, from L. P. and H.P. compressors 1, 2, driven by a turbine 6 is heated by the exhaust gases from the turbine, in an exchanger 4, part of the compressed air being further heated in tubes T in a combustion chamber 5 and passing to the turbine, the remainder acting as combustion air in 5 and actuating a turbine 7 giving external power. Coolers 3, 8, for the air, are provided. Make-up air supplied to the system by a compressor 9 enters the exchanger 4 at a temperature approximately the same as that of the air in the tubes 13 at that point. The compressor 9 can be fitted with devices for adjusting the pressure, or quantity of the air delivered, the speed remaining approximately constant. The first row of guide blades may be adjustable, and the specification states that the first rotor may be designed as a turbine using kinetic energy imparted to the air in consequence of reduction of cross-sectional area in the adjustable guide blading. The number of stages used in the compressor 9 may be varied. A change-speed gear may be fitted between the turbine 6 and the compressor 9 so that by altering the speed of the compressor the pressure and the quantity of the air-delivered can be adjusted. The exhaust from turbine 7 may be used externally of the plant.
