Abstract

571,111. Optical apparatus. FIDELITY ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and CROWTHER, F. K. Aug. 18, 1943, No. 11666/42. [Class 97 (i)] [Also in Group XL] A gas discharge lamp for forming an illuminated graticule comprises an outer envelope having a flat transparent end wall A, an inner envelope dividing the space into outer and inner compartments B, C, and a hole or restricted passage in the end wall of the inner envelope adjacent the flat end of the outer envelope which forms a glowing graticule by reason of the glow discharge passing through it between electrodes E, F in the compartments. In the lamp shown the inner envelope is formed by a tubular wall Q on which fits a cap K of insulating material such as porcelain. In the top surface of the cap is a circular groove M communicating by an aperture O with the outer compartment and by a passage N with a central aperture D leading to the inner compartment. The glow in the groove M and aperture D provides a graticule in the form of a nearly complete circle with a central spot. A disc L of glass, quartz, mica or other suitable material covers the top surface of the cap. In another form, providing only a glowing spot, the electrode E is situated in a recess in the top of the cap K, around a central aperture in which the spot is formed. To eliminate halo an opaque diaphragm is provided having in it a hole of the desired shape and size above the aperture in the cap.
