Abstract

569,837. Air and mixture pumps ; regulating. CROSET, L. P. Oct. 21, 1943, No. 17345. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In a pressure-charged engine in which a greater weight of air per cycle is introduced into the working cylinder at lower than at higher speeds, the larger proportion of air admitted is also dependent upon and varies with the load and is attained by varying the velocity ratio between the engine and a rotary or other blower. The control lever 7 of a variable-torque fluid coupling disposed between the engine and the blower.is linked to one end of a speed control lever 23 connected intermediately by a link 22 to one end of the rod of a power piston 16 having its other end connected through a resilient coupling 19, 20 to the fuel injection pump control rod 17. The remote end of the lever 23 is pivoted to a manual speed control lever 25 and a link-and-lever system 27 ... 30 connects this lever to the support of a speeder spring 13 associated with a fluid governor 8 driven by the engine cam-shaft 9. Through a rod 14c the upper end 14d of the spring 13 engages a rocking lever 14b operatively connected to a valve 14 actuated by the weights 12 of the governor and controlling the flow of pressure fluid from a passage 36 to one or. other of passages 37, 38 leading to opposite ends of the chamber 15 of the power piston 16 which thus adjusts the fuel supply as the speed varies. The resilient connection 19, 20 permits a stop 34 constituted by the end of a lever 32 connected to the hand control lever 25 to limit the change in' the fuel supply. An increase in load, by checking the speed, causes the governor 8 to operate the valve 14, permitting the pressure fluid to move the piston 15 to the left and increase the fuel supply. The link 22 may be replaced by a toggle linkage, the central pivot of which is displaceable by an aneroid capsule to apply a correction for altitude. In a constant-speed engine, the governor 8 is replaced by a manual adjustment and the lever 23 is pivoted about a fixed point instead of the end of the hand lever 25.
