Abstract

569,217. Batteries. BOOTS PURE DRUG CO., Ltd., COPPOCK, J. B. M., and GREW, E. L. April 30, 1943. No. 6876. [Class 53] [Also in Group III] A neutral compound for use as an activator with manganese dioxide depolarizing agents in primary electric cells is obtained by hydrating pyrolusite or like natural manganese ore by the action of an alkali metal hydroxide and then replacing the alkali metal in the hydrated manganese dioxide formed, by base exchange, by treatment with a soluble zinc salt. The product contains a hydrated form of zinc manganite, and the addition of 25 per cent of the product by weight to untreated pyrolusite is found to increase the life of a cell in which it is employed as a depolarizer by about 70-100 per cent. According to an example, powdered natural pyrolusite is added slowly with vigorous stirring to fused caustic soda until the mixture begins to solidify. The resulting greenishbrown friable mass is cooled, ground to a fine powder, washed with successive portions of cold water, filtered and dried in an oven at 50‹ C. The product thus obtained is stirred with successive portions of zinc sulphate solution until the supernatent liquor is found to contain zinc. The solid is then stirred with a further portion of zinc sulphate solution, washed twice with water by decantation and dried at a temperature not exceeding 70‹ C.
