Abstract
568,242. Vacuum cleaner filters. HOOVER, Ltd. Sept. 21, 1943, No. 15469. Convention date, Sept. 22, 1942. [Classes 8 (i) and 8 (ii)] Air is drawn through the nozzle of a vacuum cleaner into a preliminary separator such as a whirl chamber 14 by a fan &c, and then discharged through a final separator such as a filter 44 which is cleaned by a nozzle &c. 38 connected by a conduit 37 to the separator 14, a valve, 61 controlling the flow of air into the preliminary separator either through the normal inlet or through the filter-cleaning conduit 37. The air after passing through filter 44 cools the motor 7 and 'escapes through openings in. its casing. The valve 61 is operable by a lever 63 on its shaft, actuated by a solenoid against a spring ; the switch 76 for the solenoid circuit is held open in the inoperative position of nozzle 38 by the manual actuating shaft 54 of the nozzle engaging the operating lever 77 and closes when the nozzle is actuated by being moved up and down. In a modification, the valve 61 is pivoted horizontally, the pivot engaging a rod which is raised by a spring to move the valve into position where the conduit 37 opens to .the separator 14, but is held down by the nozzle 38 engaging a foot on the rod in normal working. The separator 14 is supported on a base containing a dirt container 4 covered by a baffle 23 and the passage from this chamber to the fan contains a strainer 22.
