Abstract
4-Keto-tetrahydrothiophenes of the formula <FORM:0568079/IV/1> are prepared by the reaction of an a - b 1 - dihalogen ketone of the formula <FORM:0568079/IV/2> wherein R represents an alkyl group and X and Y represent halogen atoms, with an alkali metal sulphide under anhydrous conditions. In the examples, 2-ethyl-4-ketotetrahydrothiophene is made by reaction of chloromethyl-b -bromobutyl ketone with sodium sulphide in a medium of benzene or absolute ethyl alcohol. Specification 566,506 is referred to. Chloromethyl-b -bromobutyl ketone is made by treating b -bromovaleric acid chloride with diazomethane and decomposing the resulting diazoketone with hydrochloric acid.
