Abstract
568,055. Pressure-relieving devices. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 6, 1943, No. 12701. Convention date, Aug. 11, 1942. [Class 135] A pressure-relief device for an enclosed casing comprises a plunger 16 normally held in a retracted position by a shaft 23, but on rotation of the shaft, the plunger is released and pushed upwards by a spring 30 so that a sharp point 17 carried by the plunger will rupture a frangible diaphragm of tempered glass. The controlling member is an evacuated bellows 42 which is distended by an internal spring, but when the pressure in the casing becomes abnormal, the bellows collapses and a rod 41 connected thereto rises and, by means of a link 44, rotates a shaft 33. The end 36 of this shaft is half-round in section and supports the end of an arm 34 secured to a shaft 23 which is formed with a cut-away portion 27 pressing on a ledge 26 in the plunger 16 and holding the latter in the retracted position. As shaft 33 rotates, it releases arm 34 which drops and rotates shaft 23, the cut-away portion 27 thereupon releasing the plunger 16 to allow the latter to rise and rupture the diaphragm. A spring 45 is interposed between the bellows 42 and the arm 44, and the pressure at which the device operates is determined by the setting of nuts 55 which position the link 44. The various parts of the device are carried by a bracket 18 bolted inside the casing.
