Abstract

567,645. Valves. TURNER MANU. FACTURING CO., Ltd., and GROVES, W. R. Nov. 6, 1942, No. 15671. [Class 135] A relief valve for byepassing the delivery of a pump feeding an accumulator when the accumulator pressure exceeds a predetermined maximum, is adapted to open and close with a snap action. The relief valve 7 cooperates with a seat 8 and is integral with a small piston 6 of smaller area than the valve subject to the pressure in the outlet 3 transmitted through a passage 29. The valve is normally held to its seat by a spring 13 engaging an abutment 12 having a partspherical boss engaging a tapered bore in a large piston 10 engaging a hollow valve stem provided with ports 30 and 25. A bore 15 in the piston 10 is formed with a seat for a non- return valve 17 lightly loaded by a spring 20. Normally, fluid from an inlet 2 passes through a groove 31 and spring-loaded non-return valve 26 to the outlet 3. When the pressure reaches the desired maximum it acts on the piston 6 to crack open the valve 7, fluid then passes through ports 30, tubular stem 9 and ports 25 to act on the upper surface of the piston 10 to open the valve widely. Fluid then opens the valve 17 and passes through ports 21, 22 to the relief outlet 4. A bleed port 23 is formed in the valve 17 to prevent leakage past the main valve, building up a pressure above the piston 10. According to the Provisional Specification, the valve 7 may be replaced by a piston valve and the seating for the valve 17 is formed on the underside of the piston 10.
