[Classes 7 (i) and 7 (ii)] Fuel is burnt in an internal-combustion engine power plant at a high temperature and in an insufficiency of air to produce carbon monoxide, and the products of combustion are cooled by expansion or otherwise as a preliminary to the addition thereto of water and excess air for completing the combustion to produce a motive fluid which may be used to actuate rotary or reciprocating machinery or for jet propulsion. Cylinders 1, Fig. 1, in line, house pistons 9, Fig. 2, which are rigidly connected together by a frame 20 and operate on a two-stroke cycle, air being introduced through valves 10 for compression beneath the pistons before transfer through passages 11 to the combustion space into which fuel is'injected. The combustion spaces exhaust through a common water-cooled valve 2 rotated through a crank 19 by the movements of the frame 20 into a turbine 3 which is integral with an impeller 4 for supplying air to an outer combustion chamber 8. The gases from the turbine pass through a heat-exchanger 5 to an inner chamber 7, where they are mixed with water drawn from the cooling chambers of the exhaust valve 2 and the moistened gases pass into the outer chamber 8 for final combustion. The final products are intermingled with air or moisture to provide the motive fluid.
