Abstract
566,833. Selenium cells ; rectifiers. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. June 18, 1943, No. 9837. Convention date, June 24, 1942. [Class 40 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] A selenium cell or a rectifier is made with a seleniumcoated metal plate immersed in an acid solution and having on the surface of the selenium coating a layer containing hydrogen and selenium, said layer having been formed by evolving hydrogen from the said coated plate in an electrolytic cell containing an acid electrolyte. In the cell shown in Fig. 1, the selenium-coated plate 12 is immersed in an acid electrolyte 13 as a cathode 12 opposite an anode 11, which may be of platinum, gold, carbon, palladium or nickel. The plates 11, 12 are connected by leads 9, 10 to terminals 5, 6, the leads being sealed in tubes 2, 3 extending down into the electrolyte which may be sulphuric acid and is contained in a glass vessel 1. In a modification, the casing of the cell is made fattish like a watch.
