Abstract
564,733. Abrasive-coated sheets. BEHR-MANNING CORPORATION. June 8, 1942, No. 7808. Convention date, June 9, 1941. [Class 60] In making abrasive-coated sheet material comprising abrasive grains adhesively secured to a backing, the adhesive coat is at least partly set to anchor the grains, a sizing coat of adhesive is applied over the grains, and the abrasive-coated sheet is maintained with its grain surface facing downwardly while the adhesive coat is softened by the sizing coat and until the adhesives have set sufficiently to keep the grains fixed during subsequent operations and handling. While facing downwardly, the sheet may be treated with a heated atmosphere containing in vapour form a solvent for the adhesive used, e.g. water in the case of glue, alcohol with phenol-aldehyde resin, naphtha or toluene with oil-modified alkyd resin. The sheet may be vibrated before and while it is caused to face downwardly in order to maintain or improve the orientation of the grains which may have been deposited by electrostatic coating methods, such as are described in Specifications 378,014 and 396,385. A web 10 of paper, cloth, or vulcanized fibre to which abrasive grains have been secured by means of a layer of hide glue passes from a drying room (not shown) around idler rolls 13, between rolls 14 where a sizing coat of glue is applied over the grains by the lower roll dipping in a bath 15, and around rolls 16, 17 to a chamber 18 in which the downwardly facing grain surface is subjected to the action of steam admitted through a pipe 21 and perforated plate 23. The web travels horizontally or at a small angle less than 30 degrees to the horizontal with the grain facing downwardly until the adhesive is set sufficiently to permit handling and then passes to drying rooms. The web may be vibrated by a rotating hexagonal bar 26 or other means, e.g. electromagnetic means, after leaving the steaming chamber and, if desired, also at an earlier stage.
