563,727. Elastic fluid turbines; making packing alloys. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 3, 1943, No. 3465. Convention date, March 12, 1942. [Class 110 (iii)] [Also in Groups II and XXII] Sealing means comprises projections 21, 22 on the blade-roots 18 and steel shroud band 20 respectively, and rings of soft alloy 26, 27, in a stator 16 into which the projections are allowed to cut during operation. Suitable alloys are approximately (a) 60 to 63 per cent copper, 33 to 37 per cent zinc and small quantities of lead and iron ; (b) solder comprising about 38 per cent copper, 32 per cent zinc and 30 per cent silver ; (c) 61 to 69 per cent copper, 12 to 18 per cent zinc, 9 to 15 per cent nickel, 4.5 to 7.5 per cent lead, and 1.25 to 3 per cent tin. Strips of the rings may be brazed or silversoldered into the grooves 24, 25, or they may be cast in. In a further method, strips of the alloy are welded in, segments being positioned at intervals around the grooves until complete rings are formed, and these afterwards machined.
