[Class 146 (i)] In fold-engaging files of the kind described in Specifications 518,849 and 548,333, the retaining members are made from non-elastic material, in rod or strip form, such as spring steel wire, which is either endless or has its ends bent into U-shape. The wires 6, Figs. 2 and 3, are held in a rigid supporting- member 3 of boxlike form, which is mounted in the recessed spine of the binder. The supporting-member has bevelled ends 4 and is formed with hooked parts 5 to separate the wires. Separate supporting - members may be mounted at the ends of the spine or on the ends of a connecting - member of wood, cardboard &c. The bent ends of the wires may be engaged in rows of holes 11, Figs. 5 and 6, in the supporting-members, or in longitudinal or transverse slots 12, 13, so that the positions of the wires may be varied in accordance with the thickness of the booklets, &c. to be bound. The slots may be partly closed by slides or bent tongues. The supporting-member may be in the form of a split tube or a telescoping tube. Members 16, Fig. 8, may be provided on the ends of the supporting-members to limit the sliding of the booklets on the wires.
