[Class 83 (iv)] Heading or upsetting machines, in which a number of punches are mounted on a slide on the main punch slide to co-operate in succession with a single die, have the slides movable in horizontal planes. The main slide 11 slides in guides 14, 15 and has clamped to it bars 13 that slide in the frame. The slide 16 moves on the slide 11 or on a backing plate 17 fixed thereon and has a lug 18 projecting into a recess 52 and a lug 19 projecting into a recess 53. Bars 20 parallel to the main shaft of the machine are clamped in the slide 16 and slide in bores in the slide 11 to bring the punches 31, 32 alternately into line with the die (not shown). This movement is effected by an oscillating shaft 46 carrying a crank-pin 47 linked at 48 to a pin 49 in the lug 18. The oscillation is through rather less than 180 degrees and the movement of the slide is limited by adjustable stops, the crank-pin being at dead centre when the slide engages the stops so that locking means is not necessary. A groove in the slide 16 receives ribs 23 on backing plates 22, one for each punch, and vertical grooves on the 'plates 22 receive ribs 35 on the punch holders 33, 34 thus permitting vertical and horizontal adjustment of the punches. The parts are clamped after adjustment by bolts 24 that pass through clearance holes in the parts 22, 33 and 34 and by a bolt 27 passing with clearance through lugs 42 and through half lugs 26 in the backing plates. The adjustments are effected by screws 28, 29, 37 and 38. The punches are notched to receive the inclined ends of the heads 43 of clamping bolts secured by hollow screws 44 and nuts 45. A hard plug 30 may be inserted in the slide 16 to receive pressure from the plates 22. The thrust on the punches is taken up on four widely spaced points above and below and to each side, the thrust being resolved along the dotted lines 51 towards the ends of the bars 20.
