562,052. Tube couplings. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and BROCK, W. H. J. Dec. 21, 1942, No. 17827/43. Divided out of. 561,134. [Class 99 (i)9 [Also in Groups XXII and XXVI] Members are secured to tubes of metal or synthetic resin or other plastic, either internally or externally by applying dished washers externally or internally respectively and then flattening the washers to collapse or expand the tube into contact with grooves formed in 'the fitting. Rubber rings or like resilient or soft packings may be inserted into the grooves when a fluid-tight joint is required or a coating of cement may be employed. A plug 11, Figs. 1 and 2, to which, an air pump piston 16, 17 is to be secured by a screw 18, is formed with a groove 13 over which a dished washer 14 is assembled and flattened in a press effecting a joint, as shown in Fig. 2. An end fitting 'may be secured to a tube by closing in the extreme end of the tube into a groove formed at the junction with the fitting of a spigot fitting into the tube. To expand the end of a tube 23, Fig. 4, into a groove 27 formed in a cap, this is assembled on the tube so that the tube end abuts the end 28 and a dished washer 29 is forced up to the end of the tube and flattened. In a modification, the cap 24, Fig. 6, carrying a lug 31 is secured by inserting the tube which carries an outwardly bulged. disc 33 having a groove so formed in its edge as to act as a spigot entering the tube and an abutment engaging the end. The groove 27 leads into the flange 26 by a conical section to permit the gradual expansion of the tube end as the disc is flattened by contact with the end 28. An interttiallygrooved collar may be fixed in similar manner at an intermediate point along the length of the tube. The flattening punch may have a projection from its operative face surrounding or entering the washer as the case may be to increase the displacement of metal' into the fixing groove.
