Abstract
561,946. Parachute flares. SCHERMULY, C. D., SCHERMULY, A. J., and SCHERMULY, C. Oct. 20, 1942. No. 14671. [Class 9 (ii)] A parachute flare adapted to be dropped from aircraft is provided with a screen to obscure the light from the airmen's eyes. The candle or flare casing 1 has arms 3 pivoted to its upper end, and cords 5 are attached at their lower ends to the lower ends of the arms and at their upper ends to a ring 6 to which the ends of the parachute cords are attached. A fabric or like flexible screen is carried by the arms 3. A chain 7 connects the upper end of the candle to the ring so that when the flare is dropped and the parachute opens, the candle continues to drop until the chain is tight and the arms 3 are rotated from a position alongside the candle to open position as shown. Stops may be provided to prevent the arms opening too widely. A depending supplementary edge screen 9 may be provided for the lower portion. The arms and screens are held in collapsed position by a cord 8 which breaks when the parachute opens. In a modification, the arms are pivoted at a lower position on a casing enclosing the candle and the upper end of the screen attached to a point on the candle supporting chain 7, while the lower end of the screen is connected to the lower ends of the pivoted arms, thus dispensing with the cords 5.
