Abstract

561,563. Liquid - pressure engines. WILSON, W. G. Nov. 20, 1942, No. 16453. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] In a reversible rotary pump or motor in which radial cylinders rotate about a stationary valve and in which the stroke of the pistons is varied by means of a ring of adjustable eccentricity, the pistons engaging with a separate guide frame which is outside the cylinder block and which is pivoted about a fixed centre external to the assembly, the valve comprises a primary sleeve 12, a secondary sleeve 14, and a central core 15, the cylinder block 10 and the sleeve 12 being rotated about the sleeve 14 by means of a Hooke's joint 22 and a driving shaft 17. There are an even number of cylinders 11 and they register with radial ports 13 in the sleeve 12 and arcuate parts 25, 26 in the sleeve 14, the ports 25, 26 communicating by longitudinal grooves 23, 24 in the core 15, and ports 27, 28 in the opposite end of the sleeve 14, with suction and delivery chambers 29, 30. Lubrication between the sleeves 12, 14 is effected by means of cataract grooves 57 and annular recesses 58. Each piston 32 is fitted with a trunnion block 34 with pins 35 which project through slots 36 in the cylinders 11 and engage the outer ends of connecting rods 37, the inner ends of which pivot freely on pins 38 secured to the hubs of U-shaped annular housings each formed by a pair of. discs 39, 40. The two housings are connected together by bolts 39a and are supported by bearings 41 inside frames 42 connected together by bolts 43. These frames 42 are pivoted about an external fulcrum pin 44 carried by fixed brackets 45 and can be swung laterally to vary the eccentricity by means of a rod 46 secured to one of the bolts 43. In a modification, the ends of the pins 35 are fitted with segmental blocks which slide in channelled rings and the delivery port is coaxial with the core 15.
