Abstract

Heading F1A In a radial cylinder motor comprising a rotor 10 having pistons 11 on which are mounted slidable cylinders 13 reciprocated by a stationary cam track 22, an annular valve member 26 disposed between a valve casing 25 a sleeve 27 and a flange 28 of the sleeve, and plungers 39 in cavities 40 in the flange 28, fluid supplied to cavities 40 press plungers 39 against member 26, which in turn presses hub 10 against end cover 20a and balance pockets 24 in the end cover 20a balance the hub. The valve member has alternate inlet and outlet passages 31 and 32, and fluid introduced by inlet 36 and annular chamber 34, passes through axial passages 31 and 16 in the valve member and rotor, and via radial passages 18 in the pistons into the cylinders 13; the fluid is exhausted via passages 18, 16 and 32, chamber 35 and outlet 37. Cavities 40 are connected to the passages 31 and 32 by ducts 41 in member 26 and plungers 39, inlet and outlet fluid supplied to the cavities forces the plungers against the valve member. Helical springs 42 between the plungers and flange 28 hold the valve member against the rotor whilst starting. In another embodiment, Fig.3, two valve members 26 and 26a are provided; member 26 has axial passages A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP>, A<SP>3</SP> and B<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>2</SP>, B<SP>3</SP> communicating inlet and outlet chambers 34 and 35 respectively and member 26a has passages C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP>, C<SP>3</SP> and D<SP>1</SP>, D<SP>2</SP>, D<SP>3</SP> communicating chambers 34a and 35a respectively. An inlet pipe 41 communicates chamber 34 and is connected to chamber 34a by a pipe 41a and inlet port 36a; an outlet pipe 42 is similarly connected to chambers 35, 35a, a pipe 42a and outlet 37a. A two way valve 43 may connect chamber 34a and pipe 41, and chamber 35a and pipe 42, Fig. 4 (not shown), to give maximum torque at low speed. Alternatively chambers 35a and 34a may be connected Fig. 5 (not shown), and fluid may circulate idly through the valve 26a causing increased speed but reduced torque. The rotor is balanced similarly to the first embodiment by balance pockets in the opposed faces of the valve members.
