Abstract

A mixture of carbon and binder is subjected to mechanical vibration of a high frequency, at least 6,000 vibrations per minute, compressed if desired, and then baked. The mixture may be p vibrated by immersing a vibrator therein, or by jolting the mould, and may be vibrated before or after it has been poured into a mould or into an electrode shell through which pass electrodes of the continuous self-baking type, e.g. the treatment may be carried out while the mixture is in a ladle. As a mould is being filled, a vibrator immersed in the mixture in the mould may be gradually raised, or the mould may descend, or both may occur simultaneously. The vibrator may be of the type used in vibrating high-grade concrete. The mixture may be heated before being vibrated. By the invention, a one-piece sector-shaped block constituting part of the wall of a furnace and a corresponding section of the hearth may be made.
