561,290. Building up articles by spraying. EDWARDS, H. F. Dec. 29, 1942, No. 18439. [Class 83 (iv)] In making articles by spraying metal on to a former and then stripping the article therefrom, a magnetic metal, e.g. steel or alloy steel, is used and, during at least the initial stages of the spraying operation, arranging a magnetic field to act in direction to retain the sprayed particles in contact with the surface of the former. This may be done by arranging an electromagnet 14 below the former 11 which is made of a non-magnetic material such as synthetic resin, laminated paper or wood pulp treated with synthetic resin, or low-melting-point alloys, e.g. lead bismuth alloy.. Where a non- uniform layer of sprayed metal is required a non-uniform field may be used, e.g. by making the former of magnetic material. The electromagnetic field is preferably cut off when all the surface 12 has a coating of sprayed metal..
