Abstract

A liquid non-crazing composition comprises an aqueous solution or dispersion of a urea- or thiourea - formaldehyde resin and furfuraldehyde. Fillers such as wood-flour, cotton waste and shredded paper pulp may be added. The composition may be used as an adhesive in conjunction with a hardening agent such as sodium bisulphate and ammonium chloride. It may also be used for making cast products and for impregnating or coating fabric and paper. In an example urea and aqueous formaldehyde are heated and in solution concentrated to a solid content of 65-70 per cent. Wood flour and furfuraldehyde are mixed, added to the solution and worked to produce a homogeneous product.
